Face Your Fears
Does the current state of the economy cause your teeth to chatter with fear? As, I sit here today looking out my window at gray skies I ask myself. What are you afraid of? Has job loss or lay offs touched you or a loved one personally? Every day you turn on the TV there are news reports of more businesses laying off workers or closing their doors all together. Are you scared? Sometimes I am, as I am among the group of lay off'es.
Do you have days where you feel like you just want to pull the blankets up over your head, go back to sleep and wake up when all this is over? Only if life worked that way. But come to think of it, do you really want to hide from this chance to chin up and stare fear in the face? I don't. I won't. I can't. I know too much about myself now to do that. How about you?
What do you think it would feel like, to sit down or stand up your choice and face your fear head on with your chin up, head held high? You may think, I can't do that. How would I do that, you ask? A great life coach I know once told me, "it is just a feeling and a feeling can't hurt you". Fear is a feeling and yes she is right, it can't hurt you. What can hurt you is sitting back and letting your fear further pull you into its grip.
Again, how do I face my fears you ask? It starts with getting to know your body and how "fear" feels in your body. Where do you feel it, do your toes tingle, your stomach flutter or burn, do you feel tightness in your chest or get a lump in your throat? These may be some of the ways you feel fear in your body. Do these sensations or feelings hurt you? No, not really. Are they fun? No, not particularly. Will they kill you, not likely. As you can see facing fear may not be as hard as you might have thought. The act of feeling the fear is actually a step in facing your fears. The next time you start to become afraid or fearful, stop and feel the sensation. Make a note of where and what it feels like in your body. Our bodies are amazing things and can face many amazing obstacles, including fear. Try it you just might find you like how you feel once you face your fears.
Till we meet again.
Fondly,
Marcy
